January 9-11 Good at Learning

What things should art teachers of the 21st century possess, know, understand, and be able to do well? (see Wilson p. 41)=Discussion
 Management
Culture, things going on in the world, relevant knowledge
Passion, love for art
Knowing lots of artists
Resourcefulness
Communication skills, speaking, body language, fix problems, talk to parents, making things visual
Ability to make connections
Appreciation of students, art, judgment, assessment
(what make teaching a profession; clinical judgments)
a range of medium skills
GOOD AT LEARNING, changing, not static, flexible, open minded, willingness to appreciate new things, humble, a beginners mind, listen, ask, experiment out of our comfort zone, vulnerable. Be mentored.  Be a mentor.

Why do we even make art? and the follow up question, Why do we teach about art. At least DBAE
Art as a way to understand, as a way to see purpose
To make something someone wants to buy (because it inspires them, interests them, is beautiful to them, is otherwise valuable)
As a way to meditate or pray to slow things down
We have an intrinsic need to create.
To shock or provoke people, to be a catalyst for social or ecological change
To make an evolution or revolution in culture or society
To make yourself visible, to affirm who you are, to impress
As entertainment, refreshment, therapy, relaxation, play
As a way to see things differently
To communicate emotion, feelings, ideas that cannot be said with words, it is
A language with signifiers and symbols

To bring hope and beauty and to build instead of tearing down or destroying
